One year ago, David Church kissed a beautiful, brilliant woman on an airfield in Iraq—and hasn't stopped thinking about her ever since. Now, the military veteran gets a chance to rekindle that fire when he sees his lost love again—looking sexier than ever—at an international conference in Athens. David yearns to take her in his arms, to hold her close and never let go. But when the bullets begin to fly, it's not just his heart on the line. It's his life.

When Molly Solent agreed to deliver intelligence for the U.S. government, she didn't realize she'd be caught in the crossfire of a surprise ambush—and underneath the hard-muscled body of David Church. Shielding her from harm and swearing to protect her, the elite bodyguard reignites a searing passion that Molly can't resist. But with unforeseen danger around every corner—and unquenchable desire in every embrace—falling in love could be the greatest risk of all…

Kitty's Book Spot - Getting to know Emmy Curtis, Author

INTERVIEW:

1. Do you have a favorite book or story that you loved as a child/youth?

I loved A TRAVELLER IN TIME by Alison Uttley. As you can tell by the spelling in the title, it’s an English book written in the 1930s. No I’m NOT that old! It was about a girl who travels through time (the clue was in the title ;-) ) from the 1930s to the 1500s to become involved in a plot to free Mary, Queen of Scots. As a child it showed me a whole world outside of my own, which really set me on the road to writing!

2. For our readers getting to know you, how old were you when you started to write?

*coughs* What? Um *coughs*... okay, I was in my thirties when I started to write. I wrote a YA book about a time traveling girl who goes back to the time of Achilles and the war at Troy. Oh. I just realized what I did there. Time traveling. Who would have thought this interview would be like therapy? Then I wrote another YA, also contemporary, but wrapped in historical myth. And then I started writing romance. By then I was *cough* a little older.

3. Do you write to music or make playlists for your books?

I did for my first YA that I ever wrote (the Achilles one), but since that book became a sock-drawer book, so did the music. And every time I listened to the music, I remembered how I failed on this book! So since then I haven’t, not least because it’s hard to get music that suits war zones! (Feel free to suggest some!)

4. Would you share a secret about yourself for our readers?

I have been in the British Intelligence MI5 offices more than once...

5. You have lived in many places. Where do you think was the most romantic?

All have been romantic for different reasons...Paris for the feeling of all the amazing artists who had been there before me, New York, because of the feeling that something exciting is always just about to happen, London, because it’s my hometown, and comfortable yet thrilling at the same time...but I think North Carolina, where I became a Mrs., is the most romantic (so far) :)

6. Does your special someone influence any of your leading men?

Abso-bloody-lutely. My husband is active duty US Air Force and a few of his own combat experiences have made their way into my books. And nearly every one of my heroes have an element of him in them, be it turns of phrase, opinions, or just experiences. Let’s not tell him that though...

Emmy Curtis is an editor and a romance writer. An ex-pat Brit, she quells her homesickness with Cadbury Flakes and Fray Bentos pies. She's lived in London, Paris and New York, and has settled for the time being, in North Carolina. When not writing, Emmy loves to travel with her military husband and take long walks with their Lab. All things considered, her life is chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny. And if you get that reference...well, she already considers you kin.

Excerpt:

David Church eyed the people talking to his principal. Close protection was a bitch, but the company he worked for had saved him from self-destruction, so he basically owed them his soul. And this week, his soul was guarding a very important scientist. He had no idea who would want to hurt a scientist, but his boss had assigned him to Athens, and here he was.

Although his attention was on Professor Rankin, he was also scanning the room for someone special, the other reason he hadn’t complained at taking this job: Molly Solent was on the week’s schedule, and he wanted to see her.

Badly. Like blue-balls badly.

He’d kept track of her for nearly a year, since they’d met, briefly, in Iraq. At the time he’d been in no shape to choose a tie color, let alone date someone as…unique as Molly.

From the second he’d laid eyes on her, he knew she was trouble. Trouble for him, anyway. His eyes rested for a second on the far wall, which was adorned with a mosaic picture of an ancient Greek warrior. In some way he was like that mosaic. A fine illustration of a fighter, but when you got up close, you could see the cracks.

Millions of cracks. Good for no one, especially someone like Molly. Hell, he was barely in good enough shape to have this job. But his CEO had seen something in him—or so he’d said—something that David couldn’t see himself, and had sent him on a series of low-risk jobs. It had been almost enough to take his mind off Molly.

She had haunted his days and nights with her eyes that were full of promise, full of a future than he couldn’t see. She’d seen him at his worst, and it didn’t seem to faze her at all. Her eyes. He closed his own as he thought about her again. Innocent and totally open. She’d wanted him and hadn’t been afraid at all of making it clear.

Her image had kept him going through the long, dark nights of recovery. The single chink of light in his life. He was scared to lose that. Scared to see her.

The one thing that he was proud of, pretty much the only thing, was walking away from her before he sucked her into his downward spiral.

He had to keep his mind on that one point if he saw her here. He wasn’t fixed yet. Wasn’t entirely right. He still looked longingly at liquor, remembering the peace that came at the bottom of the bottle. He still dreamed that he’d fallen off the wagon. When he woke up, all he could remember is how good it felt. And the hallucinations. Nope. He definitely wasn’t ready for Molly. And she definitely didn’t deserve the shitstorm that seemed to always revolve around him.

The professor moved to speak to someone else, and David snapped back into alertness. He scanned the immediate crowd around him. No threats. But he couldn’t relax. She could be here. Molly could be right here, in the same room as him. He ran a finger under his collar as his temperature rose.

REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW REVIEW

This is book # 4, in the Alpha Ops series. Like I have said before, this is a standalone novel. I always recommend reading any series in order as the author intends, for reader understanding and enjoyment. This book can be read alone, but it is so much better in order.

David and Molly met a year prior, and see each other at a cocktail party at a conference she is supposed to speak at. Tragedy strikes, and they are on the run together. David and Molly both wish they could have more time together.

Suspense! Heat! Passion that is enough to ignite even the reader... yes it is in there!

Molly always knew she would not get that much time with David. She takes any time he can give her. Knowing their time is running out, and feeling guilty she has sucked him into her international mess.

David is grateful for every minute he has with Molly. He is sad she cannot trust him like she should to keep them safe. He knows he will keep her safe, or die trying. Which he just might.

They both have a magnetic pull to one another that cannot be ignored. The sexual tension is incredible! The story is fast paced and exciting! I am rooting for them from the beginning and screaming at them as the book progresses. Definitely a keeper for your bookshelf! A real asset to the series. I cannot wait for the next book!
