Kitty’s Book Spot Interview for Romancing the Ranger by Jennie Marts
QUESTIONS:
1. Do you write to music or make playlists for the books you write? I prefer to write when it’s quiet when I’m home, but I do write to music when I’m out at Panera or a coffeeshop. And I’ll bet you’d be surprised by what is playing inside of my noise-cancelling headphones. I’ve found that I can’t write to music with lyrics, because I find myself either singing along or focusing on the lyrics instead of my book thoughts. So I started writing to guitar instrumental and classical instrumental, but I stumbled upon a bluegrass instrumental list in Pandora and found that when I am listening to this frantic sound of quick-tempo banjo-picking and guitar strumming, that my production increased by almost double. It’s like my fingers type quicker to keep up with the rhythm of the music. So, now when I need to write quickly, I only write to a bluegrass instrumental list that I have on Pandora. It sounds funny, but it works for me.
2. You write many types of fiction. Is there a genre you have not yet tried to write, that you really want to? Yes, I would like to do a more gritty psychological thriller. I really like reading those and would love to try my hand at one.
3. Your books often have humor and your readers adore it. Are you known for being the "funny" one? Yes, I think so. At least I think I’m funny- lol! I do feel like my sense of humor is one of my best attributes, and I use humor often to lighten the mood. My husband is funny too so often our fights are diffused with a funny comment and we end up laughing. I really like sarcastic dry wit, and I really enjoy making people laugh. I believe laughter is good for the soul, and it makes me happy to know that I can offer that.
4. Any chance you will let us know something about you no one else knows? Oh gosh, I’m such an open book that I don’t know much that people don’t already know. Most people know that I’m a terribly slow eater and I run about 5 minutes late everywhere I go. I LOVE accessories and don’t usually leave the house without a necklace, earrings, and a matching bracelet on. Something that a lot of people don’t know is that when I was in high school, I was a total rocker. It was the 80’s, and I had an awful crush on Eddie Van Halen. I had the long haired, metal mullet hairstyle and knew the words to every Scorpion and Def Leppard song. I even saw The Scorpions in concert in tenth grade, and the opening act was a little known band called Bon Jovi.
5. Did you have a favorite book or genre growing up and did that helped influence you to be a writer? As a young girl, I think the Judy Blume books had a huge influence on me as a writer and a pre-teen and a teenager. She covered the topics that nobody was talking about and delved into the feelings of so many girls who were struggling with puberty and growing up. I also was a huge Stephen King fan and read every one of his books. I think he taught me the power of description and suspense. I love having a mystery in my books, even if it’s a small one. King is the master of describing a place, or a feeling, or even a sandwich so that you can totally see it in your mind all the way down to the dab of mustard clinging to a piece of wilted lettuce.
6. We are so pleased with "Romancing the Ranger." What do you want us to take away from your book? I like to write stories that make people laugh and have an escape from their ordinary lives. And also that show ordinary people in new situations and how they prevail. Reese is a city girl who finds herself in the country saddled with rebuilding this structure that she doesn’t know how to do and under the watchful eye of Wade. But she never really lets that get her down, she just digs in and gives it her all. Even when things seem bleak, she sticks with it. And that’s a great lesson and inspirational message that I would love readers to get from this story. Plus, in the end, her perseverance pays off because she completes the project, falls in love, and gets the guy.
